Hanoi Ha Long Bay (which translates as Descending Dragon Bay) is located in Tonkin, the name for North Vietnam. It comprises thousands of limestone islands jutting out of the water, many of which contain the relics of ancient peoples and species dating as far back as 16,000 BC. To promote travel to the area, Ponchin depicts a young boy navigating his boat through the windy canals of the region. Below, two small tableaus depict other major attractions, including the Grotte des Merveilles, the largest of many caves on the islands.
